Celebrating 30 Years

Honoring History, Culture, and the Joy of Song
OUR CONCERTS THROUGH THE YEARS
From folk and gospel to Broadway and pop, our concerts reflect the diversity and spirit of our community. Take a look back at performances from the past thirty years.
-
Over the years, we’ve approached concert themes in many different ways. Sometimes we’ve chosen to commemorate the anniversary of a historical event — such as our concert of all women composers on the centenary of the 19th Amendment, our anti-war program on the anniversary of the Armistice of 1919, or our concerts featuring music from the Woodstock Festival and the Stonewall jukebox of 1969. We also performed a full program of Woody Guthrie’s songs on his centenary.
At other times, we’ve explored cultural and ethnic traditions, including concerts of slave songs, music from the African diaspora, and a program of Spanish zarzuelas. And we’ve often highlighted the work of individual composers and lyricists, such as Harold Arlen, George Gershwin, Yip Harburg, and Dorothy Fields.

Fall 2021: Virtual Video Concert
In the midst of the pandemic, our chorus continued to share music with our community. We rehearsed on Zoom, recorded our vocal parts at home, and combined those recordings into virtual videos. In April 2020, we released our first video, “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” followed by eleven more that premiered during a live-streamed performance on November 1.

I was deeply moved by the NYC Community Chorus’s concert, which celebrated the music of the Harlem Renaissance.
It was incredibly heartwarming to see this diverse group of people coming together and making music in the community. Overall, this concert was healing for my soul, and it made me realize how important it is for a group like this to exist.
